TIPS FOR HANGING ART;

1) In general, artwork should be hung so that the center point of the picture or grouping is at about eye level for the average person. While this won’t be possible in every situation, it’s a good guideline to keep in mind.

Once you’ve chosen your arrangement, it’s time to decide what height is right to start hanging your frames. In a gallery , most work is hung at around 57″ from the ground (with 57″ hitting the center of the picture), but in your home the height might vary if you’re hanging art over a couch, mantle, or bed or are especially tall or short. Generally, its advisable to keep art 6 to 12 inches from the surface of whatever you’re hanging it over, but it’s perfectly fine to put generalities aside if something else looks better

2) Another technique to remember is that a grouping of pictures should be thought of as one unit. Test an arrangement of pictures by laying everything out on a large table (or on the floor), playing with combinations until you hit upon one that works. Laying them out on paper is even better since you’ll be able to trace around each object and determine where picture hangers should be installed. Tape the paper up on the wall as a template for picture hangers and you’ll be done in no time.

3) You can also lay out pieces of scrap molding (or tape) onto the floor to form the “outside” secondaries of a picture grouping — the measurements within which the smaller pieces of art will be set. This is useful when a particular wall has certain boundaries that must be observed (such as a chair rail, windows, heating vents, and the like) and helps keep your arrangement the proper size.

4) Relate Art to wall size. Choose smaller pictures for narrow walls and larger works for big wall

5) Relate Art to furniture size. In general, when hanging art over a piece of furniture it should not be longer than the width of the furniture.

6) Light Art well. Illuminating artwork gives it importance. Picture or art lighting is a must when you want your pieces to take center stage. Great Artwork is enhanced with great presentation.

7) Hang an Art shelf. Popular art shelves are a great way to add interest and take up very little space. Artwork can be hung on the wall over the shelf as well as set onto the shelf with other decorative objects.

8) Bigger is often better. One large painting makes a statement and keeps things simple. It can also call attention to the focal point of the room.

9) Add the look of a “window” to a small or windowless area by hanging landscape art.

10) Horizontal lines tend to elongate, widen, and emphasize a casual decorating scheme. Vertical lines  however, tend to be more formal, add to the illusion of height, and can seem more elegant and refined.

Hang and enjoy. You’ve done all that hard work and it’s time to bask in the awesomeness of a beautifully decorated space! Enjoy your new art arrangement, show it off to friends, and don’t be afraid to tweak it if you feel like something isn’t working.


RECIPE OF THE WEEK!

The robust flavors of the Mediterranean cuisine are superb for summer cooking or entertaining, and you do’t have to fly anywhere to experience it.

GRILLED LAMB CHOPS WITH ROASTED GARLIC:

  • 1/4 c. extra-virgin olive oil
  • 4 thyme sprigs
  • 1 clove garlic
  • 2 head garlic
  • 2 tsp. chopped rosemary leaves
  • 1/2 tsp. ground cumin
  • 8 lamb loin chops
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper
  1. Directions:
  2. In a large, shallow dish, combine the 1/4 cup of olive oil with the thyme, minced garlic, rosemary, and cumin. Add the lamb chops and turn to coat with the marinade. Refrigerate overnight.
  3. Preheat the oven to 350°. Set the halved heads of garlic cut side up on a large sheet of foil and drizzle with oil. Wrap the garlic in the foil and roast for 1 hour, until tender.
  4. Light a grill. Remove the chops from the marinade; discard the thyme and scrape off the garlic. Season the chops with salt and pepper and grill over moderate heat until lightly charred and medium-rare, 5 minutes per side.

 

GRILLED ARTICHOKES WITH GREEN OLIVE DIP:

Ingredients:
6 artichokes 
1 ⅛ Tbsp 1 tablespoon plus 1/2 teaspoon
salt juice of 1 lemon, plus 2 tablespoon more juice
3 clove garlic, minced
 3 Tbsp olive oil
¼ tsp freshly ground black pepper 
Green Olive Dip (recipe follows)

Directions:

Slice tops off artichokes, pull off small outer leaves, trim stems, and snip off thorny tips. In a large pot, bring 1 to 2 inches water to a boil. Add 1 tablespoon salt, juice of 1 lemon, and artichokes; cover and steam until artichoke bottoms pierce easily, 20 to 40 minutes, depending on their size. Drain artichokes. When cool enough to handle, cut each in half lengthwise and scrape out fuzzy center.

In a small bowl, combine garlic, oil, remaining 2 tablespoons lemon juice and 1/2 teaspoon salt, and the pepper. Brush artichokes with garlic mixture.

Prepare a charcoal or gas grill for direct medium heat (about 350 F). Grill artichokes, turning once, until lightly browned, 8 to 11 minutes. Serve with olive dip.

Make Ahead: Artichokes through step 1, up to 2 days, chilled. Green olive dip, up to 2 days, chilled.

For Green Olive Dip: In a blender, puree 1/2 cup chopped flat-leaf parsley, 5 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil, 2 tablespoons chopped green olives, 1 tablespoons drained capers, 1 tablespoons fresh lemon juice, 1/2 teaspoon Dijon mustard, 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper, and 1/8 teaspoon salt until coarsely pureed.
